Transport options in Ruapehu

Ruapehu is a region that is particularly easy to reach by public transport, because it sits on State Highway 1 , State Highway 4, and the main railway line. You can disembark at any of the major towns, then use local transport services to access ski fields and walking tracks. Self-drive is your other option, but you'll need to take special care in winter.

Getting to and from Ruapehu

By Road

Ruapehu region is flanked by State Highways 4 and 1. If you're driving the length of the North Island, the region is almost impossible to miss.

InterCity Coachlines provides a service that departs Auckland or Wellington on Sundays to Fridays. The coaches stop at Taumarunui, National Park Village and Ohakune.

By Air

Hamilton airport is only 2 hours away by road and has direct flights from Australia. Stop off at Waitomo Caves on the way to Ruapehu district.

Taupo airport is a 1 ½ hour drive away and receives flights from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

By Train

Tranz Scenic provides a twice daily rail service departing Auckland or Wellington. Trains stop at Taumarunui, National Park, Ohakune and Waiouru.

Getting around Ruapehu

If you're in the region to ski, efficient shuttle services are available to take you up the mountain.

During the hiking season, shuttles can take you to the beginning of walking tracks and provide transport home when you reach the end.

If you're driving a car or motorhome, you'll find road conditions excellent at most times of the year. In winter, snow and ice can make some routes hazardous.
