Transport options in Southland

Arrive by air or by road, but be sure to allow yourself the freedom of self-drive - it's the best way to discover the friendly towns and wild landscapes of Southland. During your travels you'll want to abandon your car for a day and take to the sky - a scenic flight over Fiordland may become the highlight of your trip.

Getting to and from Southland

By Road

Bus services run to and from Southland, or you can hire a rental car and drive yourself. The roads are well maintained, clearly signposted and uncrowded.

By Air

Flights depart regularly each day from Invercargill Airport - just a few minutes from the central city - to all major centres. The airport is also the base for passenger flights to Stewart Island and for sightseeing flights.

Flying Times:

  • Auckland to Invercargill - 2 hours, 30 minutes
  • Wellington to Invercargill - 2 hours
  • Christchurch to Invercargill - 1 hour, 10 minutes
  • Stewart Island to Invercargill - 20 minutes

Getting around Southland

Rental Cars for self-drive are available in Invercargill

Scenic tours are available from local tourism operators. Shuttle buses run between Invercargill, Fiordland, Queenstown and other Southland-Otago destinations, while long-distance coach services operate from the central city.
