Transport options in Taranaki
Getting to and from Taranaki couldn't be easier. Taranaki is almost equidistant
from Wellington and Auckland; flights and buses arrive from both centres several
times a day. A rental car or campervan will serve you well around the region,
and you'll find the roads pleasantly uncongested. Cyclists particularly enjoy
touring Taranaki - gentle, undulating roads keep the journey interesting.
Getting to and from Taranaki
By Air
You can fly to New Plymouth from Auckland, Wellington or Nelson. In all cases,
the flight takes about 45 minutes. On a clear day, the views of Mount Taranaki
and the Tasman Sea coast are fabulous.
By Road
From north or south, State Highway 3 will bring you to New Plymouth. If you're
driving from Wellington, you can take a more scenic route along State Highway
45 - the Surf Highway. From the north, you have the option of a scenic detour
along the Forgotten World Highway - State Highway 43.
Daily scheduled services by Newmans and InterCity Coachlines can bring you to
the Taranaki region from Auckland, Wellington, Waitomo, Palmerston North or Hamilton.
Getting around Taranaki
Once in the region, there are over ten international and local vehicle hire companies.
You can hire anything from a scooter to a motor home.
If you prefer not to drive, local coach and shuttle companies can take you around
the region. Some accommodation establishments have courtesy pick-ups. There are
taxis in the large centres, as well as planes and helicopters for scenic flights.
