Wellington is at the southern tip of the North Island. Located in the centre of New Zealand, Wellington is the gateway between the two islands. The city has an international airport; it is also the departure point for ferries to the South Island.

Getting to and from Wellington

Wellington is less than one hour's flight from anywhere in New Zealand. Wellington Airport receives international flights from Australia, and many other countries. The airport is only ten minutes drive from the city centre and a taxi fare should cost around NZ$25.

State Highway 1 leads into Wellington via the Kapiti Coast. Drivers on State Highway 2 will be following the signposted Classic New Zealand Wine Trail through the Wairarapa into Wellington via Upper and Lower Hutt. After a ride on the vehicular ferry across Cook Strait self-drive travellers can continue on State Highway 1, which runs the length of the South Island. There are two main ferry operators plying Cook Strait - the Interisland Line and Bluebridge. Both offer passenger and vehicular services.

Getting around Wellington

Getting around the city is easy because it's so compact. Walking is one of the best ways to discover Wellington. There is also a good public transport system, with regular buses and trains linking the city to outer regions.

The Cable Car travels from downtown Wellington up to the Botanic Garden and Carter Observatory. Harbour ferries provide a link between the city and the seaside village of Eastbourne. You can explore the Wairarapa wine country, the beautiful Kapiti Coast, Porirua and the Hutt Valley with Tranz Metro.
