For 15 days Auckland Harbour has hosted yachts that were raced by international sailing teams. Ten teams competed for first place with the final taking place between Alinghi from Switzerland and Emirates Team New Zealand. Emirates Team New Zealand dominated the finals with a 3-1 win over Alinghi. The two yachts used for the regatta were modified to ensure performance would be as close as possible.
The teams and the race yachts were based at Viaduct Harbour, a venue created for the 2000 and 2003 America’s Cup series. Situated right in downtown Auckland, Viaduct Harbour is fully-furnished with bars, restaurants, a magnificent promenade and a full-selection of hotel and serviced-apartment accommodation. The venue also includes purpose-designed facilities and full services for visiting super yachts.
Auckland is recognised for its ability to host a great regatta, both on and off the water. It is located on a narrow isthmus between two magnificent harbours and recently earned the title of fifth top lifestyle city in the world. At every point of the compass, you’ll find fantastic adventures and experiences.
An hour’s drive west of the city centre takes you through lush native forest to wild black-sand surf beaches with rugged headlands. Travel north and you’ll discover the wine-growing areas of Kumeu and Matakana. To the east there are islands for fishing, sailing and luxury lodge escapes. South is all about country living and world-class golf.
The city itself is packed with colour, culture and places of interest. People from the Pacific Islands, Europe and Asia have chosen to make Auckland their home, each adding a layer to the city’s personality. You’ll discover their influences in the unique local arts and crafts, music, food, fashion and warm hospitality.
