This route takes you directly to the volcanic plateau with all its geothermal activity. Depart New Plymouth and drive past Mt Taranaki to Wanganui, where the heritage walk is an excellent thing to do. Tongariro National Park’s three massive volcanoes are your next target – hiking, skiing and rafting are some of the adventure options. Lake views accompany the drive to Lake Taupo. Relax in hot springs and try your hand at trout fishing before you move on to the spectacular geothermal parks and Maori cultural activities of nearby Rotorua.
