New Zealand Vacation - Wildlife |
Imagine a land where the only native mammals were tiny bats; a land where birdlife evolved without predators and in total isolation; a land that was the last country on earth to be settled by humans. New Zealand’s best wildlife experiences happen in easily accessible settings as well as remote locations throughout our landscapes. As a conservation-minded country, we try to create conditions where visitors can learn about our native species in a natural way.
The most fascinating bird of all is the kiwi, our national symbol. Sit quietly in a native forest at night and listen for the distinctive "kee-wee" of this nocturnal oddity. The legend of how the kiwi lost its wings is one of the most touching tales from Maori folklore. At the Royal Albatross Centre on Otago Peninsula you can watch albatrosses soaring on the uplift - their wingspan has to be seen to be believed. Close to the albatross colony is a beach where you can spy on yellow-eyed penguins from special hides.
Wildlife viewing is a must for your New Zealand vacation, so pack an extra big memory card for your camera.
