Larnach Castle - New Zealand's only Castle

Built by William Larnach in 1871, the Castle is now privately owned by the Barker Family.
The Castle opens daily at 9am for public viewing.

New Zealand’s only castle features magnificent architecture, superb craftsmanship, panoramic tower views and a tragic and scandalous history. The Castle showcases a unique collection of New Zealand antiques. The enchanting garden at Larnach Castle has recently been rated“Garden of International significance” by the New Zealand Garden Trust. The Castle & Gardens are situated twenty minutes from the city of Dunedin and a further twenty minutes to the Otago Peninsula wildlife attractions.

Larnach Castle offers three types of accommodation

Camp Estate

A glamorous new manor house, positioned on Castle land, offers privacy but yet has the advantage of access to the Castle and Garden. The rooms are luxuriously decorated, with particular detail being paid to our guests comfort. This property offers a perfect choice for a weekend house party. 

Larnach Lodge 

Located in the Larnach Castle Garden, Larnach Lodge is a re-creation of a colonial farm building. All the rooms are individually decorated, and all have dramatic harbour views. 

Larnach Stable Stay

Comfortable budget style accommodation with shared bathrooms in the converted historic Coach House. 

Accommodation guests are invited to dine in New Zealand’s only Castle, bookings need to be made by 5pm.
