Getting Around

With so many things to do and so many spectacular places to see, choosing how you get around this country is probably as important as choosing where you want to go.

When you’re considering your transport options it’s worth remembering that this is a long and narrow country – 1600 kilometres long – and your choice of transport depends on how quickly you want to get where you’re going. Have a look at our self-drive calculator for road, air and sea travel times and distances. If you’re driving and want freedom, try taking a motorhome or car on one of these driving routes. If you’d rather leave the driving to an experienced local, there are bus and coach tours which will get you there in ease and comfort.

Travelling by air is quick and simple. Every major town and city, and all regions, has an airport with daily flights. Travelling between islands, or out to the islands, there are a variety of ferries and water transport. The inter-island service between the North and South Islands carries passengers and vehicles. By train the Main Trunk line will take you between Auckland and Wellington in about 12 hours. This is an excellent way to see the country in a very comfortable and relaxed fashion.
