The city of Auckland sits on a dormant volcanic field and is home to a number of tall volcanoes that stand sentinel over the city.
One of the most famous of Auckland's 53 volcanoes is Rangitoto, an island volcano that dominates the Hauraki Gulf. All those who climb to the summit of Rangitoto are rewarded by panoramic views of the city and harbour. You'll see old Maori terraces carved into the slopes of One Tree Hill, and climbing up Mount Eden is famous for the spectacular views you will find at the top. Giant Lake Pupuke, near the shores of Takapuna Beach, is a volcanic explosion crater.
