New Zealand is a backpacker's dream, it's almost like heaven on earth!

The experiences you can have in New Zealand as a backpacker are so diverse; it is almost as if the entire world is here, from pristine lakes and white sandy beaches to volcanoes, cloud piercing mountains and everything in between.

And these experiences are so much richer, purer and more authentic than anywhere else. In fact they are so pure and authentic; it's how you might envisage heaven. The awesome thing is how compact New Zealand is, making this amazing diversity so easy to get to and around.

Because of this you'll find that you will meet people from every nationality of the world as everyone tends to meet up in the same towns and cities as they travel the country. Making for some wicked parties with new friends.

Getting Around

Transport is as flexible as you like. Roads in New Zealand are well maintained, it's hard to get lost, traffic is minimal and you can stop pretty much anywhere you like along the way. So travelling by campervan or rental car is a great option.

Campervans are a cost-effective option for groups of people travelling together. So many people want to pick up a hire vehicle in the North Island and drop it off in the South Island, or vice versa, that rental companies offer excellent ‘relocation rates,’ generally from south to north.

If you want to skip around the country quickly, hop on a plane - New Zealand has a comprehensive domestic flight service. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how affordable domestic air travel is and booking online makes it even cheaper, and simpler too. A great website for getting the cheapest deals of the day from all airlines is Seeya

But don't forget the traditional backpacker bus. A number of companies offer hop on and hop off options as well as more structured passes.

Accommodation

Hostel accommodation ranges from private rooms with ensuite bathrooms or single, double, twin and family room options to more simple style.

And every hostel is different: some are vibrant, lively places, others peaceful. Some have luxury facilities and others are more rustic. Most have internet, TV lounges and self-catering kitchens. However, all hostels are in prime locations whether in city centres or in beautiful National Parks.

Naturally, hostels are social places to stay. You’ll no doubt make some new friends and certainly learn more about New Zealand from other travellers. Staying in hostels is a great way to get the ‘inside-info’ on backpacking - and many have travel centres and/or booking services.
