Eltham is known for its vintage and second-hand shopping. A must do when stopping here is a visit to the cheese factory to buy something delicious for your picnic basket.

New Zealand's success as a dairying nation has many links to this rural town, particularly as Eltham was the first place to export butter to England in 1884.

Today, cheese is the town’s main claim to fame, producing world-class, award-winning products from the Bridge Street Factory. The factory shop at the same location is an absolute must-visit, for locally made gourmet cheese.

Visitors to Eltham can also enjoy the charming Victorian and Edwardian buildings (one of which has been converted into a stunning antique shop called The Bank). Spend a leisurely 90 minutes walking around the beautifully biodiverse Lake Rotokare - fed by natural springs.
