New Zealand’s largest and tastiest culinary festival serves good times and great deals every August. Established in 2009, Visa Wellington On a Plate sees foodies flock to the country’s capital for two weeks of mouthwatering events so get your knives and forks out for a feast of experiences to please every palate and budget.
The festival centrepiece is DINE Wellington, a fortnight where 109 of the region's finest eateries are offering lunchtime set menus and delectable dinner deals. This year will also see the return of the popular ‘battle of the Burger’, Burger Wellington, and a bevy of over 100 events, including Beervana and the New Zealand Chocolate Festival.
Leading the events programme, Wellington Fisher & Paykel Masterclass offers foodies the chance to get close to top international and local chefs, learn their culinary secrets and watch their kitchen skills.
Wellington celebrates being the craft beer capital of the country during the festival at Beervana, an event showcasing more than 200 craft beers.
Well-known for its café culture, fine dining restaurants and gourmet local produce, Wellington is a foodie haven. The ‘coolest little capital in the world’, is a picturesque, friendly and vibrant city.
Once you’ve had your fill of the culinary delights, there are plenty of other attractions to savour. A must-visit is the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, an innovative, interactive journey through New Zealand’s story. Art, music and ballet can also be enjoyed, or simply take a walk along the beautiful waterfront or gaze over the city from Mount Victoria.
Natural delights are also easy to find in Wellington. The Wellington Botanic Garden is filled with 26 hectares of native plants, including an 800-year-old rimu tree, exotic forests and colourful floral displays. Just 10 minutes from the city centre, ZEALANDIA: The Karori Sanctuary Experience offers the chance to see the iconic bird, the kiwi, in its natural environment.
