About www.newzealand.com

The Tourism New Zealand website www.newzealand.com is an introduction to tourism in New Zealand. Through this site, potential visitors will be able to learn about the diversity of what New Zealand has to offer and how their visit can become a fantastic experience.

The Tourism New Zealand website is the official tourism portal for New Zealand. It features information that is relevant to travellers who are thinking about visiting New Zealand.

Additional specialised content exists to help the following sectors of the market and is available separately

  1. Trade information (for those who wish to sell New Zealand but reside outside of New Zealand) newzealand.com/travel/trade
  2. Tourism information (corporate communications and detailed industry analysis by Tourism New Zealand
    tourismnewzealand.com
  3. Media. (being media both on and off shore)
    newzealand.com/travel/media

Tourism New Zealand re-built newzealand.com in 2011 so that more of the content can be created by those in the Tourism industry who are both interacting and selling to the consumer. Tourism New Zealand still creates authoritative content (this is indicated as being authored by newzealand.com) but greater percentage of the content is by Hosts in the local market writing content for the consumer directly that is un-moderated by Tourism New Zealand.

The website has three main navigational elements:

Explore

Explore is an open sourced portal where anybody is able to load content. This content in the site today has been uploaded by travel sellers, regional tourism operations (RTOs), visitors and everyday contributors. This content isn’t moderated and is combined with the authoritative content authored by Tourism New Zealand. All content is clearly attributed to the author. This content takes the shape of stories or as referred to on the site, articles. The articles themselves can be:

  • Edited by anyone. This is designed to allow content to be enhanced by any person or organization, but understanding that the original author of the content has the right to accept, deny or roll back post an earlier acceptance at their leisure. When you edit content the site will automatically post the edited version to replace the original after a period of 48 hours, but the author has the right of refusal on all amendments as detailed prior, and can roll this change back.
  • Commented on. Anyone can comment on any article whether logged in through your existing account or anonymously without logging in. These comments will appear in the page and will be emailed to the original author. They can choose to respond on the site as required but are notified as to all interaction.
  • Flagging. If a browser finds content inappropriate or is not satisfied they may flag the content. They will be asked to give a reason in a drop down box. On the first flagging an email is sent to Tourism New Zealand and the author so they can review and correct if applicable. If the same content is flagged a second time the content is automatically removed from the site and shall be at the sole discretion of Tourism New Zealand to manage. If the content is flagged inappropriately Tourism New Zealand reserves the right to block the account of the person.
  • Sharing on Facebook or Twitter. All article content is free to be shared via the user’s Facebook or Twitter account if they so choose.

The articles that are loaded onto the site have tags* assigned to them. These tags allow the site to cluster similarly tagged content together. Tagging also allows content to appear under numerous tags and in differing contexts. For example an article about mountain biking in Queenstown could be tagged, Queenstown, mountain biking, adventure, and must do’s . Accordingly the structure of the site is determined by tag content that is placed in the Explore, Map or Plan & Book sections of the site.

Because of this tagging, content is managed under tags rather than locations or a formalised site structure.

*A tag is a non-hierarchical keyword or term assigned to a piece of information (such as an image, a piece of text). This kind of metadata helps describe an item and allows it to be found again by browsing or searching. Tags are chosen by the author. Source: Wikipedia

Map

Throughout the site the consumer is always able to open a map behind their content to reference the location of stories, activities, travel agents, accommodation and other planning items around New Zealand. The mapping element is a constant on the site and can be engaged when required.

The map supports icons that are common throughout the site and when the mapping function is open these icons are referred to on the right hand side of the site in the plan and book section.

Plan and Book

The website features a database of tourism industry operators in New Zealand and those selling New Zealand offshore, each with an individual web page that details the attractions and experiences they offer. Once you have decided what you want to do and where you want to travel, you can make direct contact with the individual tourism operators concerned and where applicable book directly with that Operator using the book online button included in their personal listing.

The following categories are available in the planning widget

  • Accommodation
  • Activities & Tours
  • Online Booking
  • Transport
  • Travel Agents
  • Visitor Information

The following are also available from the Plan and Book page (newzealand.com/int/plan)

  • Travel times and distance calculator
  • Events
  • Driving routes

Using the Search Tools

Within the site you have a choice of two search tools that behave quite differently:

  • Sitewide keyword search
  • Search boxes under Explore and Plan that allow you to  search within a particular topic. This searches within the section you are viewing rather than the entire website.

Sitewide Keyword Search

If you want to search the entire site use the Sitewide Keyword Search at the top of all pages. Enter a keyword and press "search".

Following are some keyword search guidelines to assist if you are having difficulty with your search:

  • AND Searches for documents that have both words in it
  • OR Searches for documents that has either word in it
  • A comma can be used instead of OR
  • NOT Eliminates documents where the word is found
  • (Parentheses) Determines how ANDs and ORs are treated. Words within parentheses are considered a unit and are considered first
  • "Quotation Marks" searched for literally, Useful when you want to search for the actual words
  • Case sensitivity default. A search automatically becomes case sensitive whenever the characters provided are of mixed case. A search for fishing or for FISHING finds fishing, Fishing, or FISHING, but a search for Fishing only finds Fishing not fishing or FISHING.

Search Results

Your search results within Explore or Plan and Book are listed by:

Article title or Operator name and include a ‘icon’ which will help you identify which section the search result comes from.  You can:

  • Click on the title or name to view specific results
  • Click on category to see introduction to this area
  • Click on location to view more information about this region
  • Click on the tags beneath the listing to find out more about the subjects that business or activity  indicated

Each listing indicates how many results have been returned and these results are listed randomly with a maximum of 10 per page
