Ann Shelton Hall of Mirrors
This new body of work continues Shelton’s photographic investigations into sites and visuality by appropriating the Claude glass, the small portable convex mirror used as an aid to painting during the 18th century. The Claude mirror allowed the painter to minimize the image of the scene they wished to paint, thus allowing them to reflect on and contemplate the scene at a reduced and controllable scale.

These photographs depict rooms in accommodations known as ‘the Phoenix building’ at the Salvation Army’s former Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facility on Rotoroa Island in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. The Claude glass allows the artist to think about the site in a confined and reflective manner. In this series Shelton develops her mirrored double image device and settles on a single laterally inverted image to further her project around a discussion of visuality. Taking the round shape of the Claude glass, these works appear literally stretched over a convex mirror where-in falls of curvature sink to the circular edges of her frame. Inverted, the images present a reflected view of the room.
