One of India's most prominent artists, Nalini Malani - who has gained an international reputation for her brilliantly layered media installations - is presenting her work at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery from October 10th - November 29th 2009.
Mother India: Transactions in the Construction of Pain is a five-screen video installation.
Malani is a pioneer of experimental art in India. She manipulates drawing, video, projection, performance, voice, text, installation, movement, painting and shadow plays to conjure emotional, narrative and sensual worlds.
Malani's earliest experiences as a refugee from the Partition of India in 1947 continue to inform her practice, which condemns cynical nationalism while honouring the potency of fables and cosmologies from Indian and European traditions.
