Michelle Kirk: Native New Zealand
The Bank Art Gallery in Invercargill invite you to view an exhibition of works by Michelle Kirk, on display from 9 November - 4 December 2009.

Michelle Kirk focuses on producing paintings which exemplify serenity.

She says, “I find myself focusing my work on our culture and wildlife more and more… I have produced this series of works which calmly flow between a love for our windswept scenic coastline and a love for the wildlife that can be appreciated nowhere else in the world.”

Her preferred mediums are ink and gouache. She works with a range of subject matters, predominantly people and animals and paints the unseen culture and beauty in the world.

“It all goes back to my working philosophy: never to forget the importance of the little details that make up not just an image, but the persona of an image; I always have this desire to turn what is often taken for granted into magical, serene works of art.”

Within this body of work Michelle has not only cleverly juxtaposed the genres of landscape and native New Zealand birdlife subjects, but has also unintentionally produced an interesting juxtaposition of style - the flat contemporary pieces versus the seemingly three dimensional realist pieces that almost portray the idea that one could step inside the painting.

Michelle completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design in Auckland in 2003 and has been exhibiting and selling her work throughout New Zealand ever since.

She has participated in many prestigious art competitions and group shows and currently lives in Wanganui, where she is a successful full time artist.
