Oamaru Public Gardens

You'll feel the magic of Oamaru Public Gardens the moment you enter the classical main gates on Severn Street. Started in 1876, these gardens are a botanical expression of Oamaru's Victorian history.

Just inside the entrance is the Craig Fountain. Made of fine Italian marble, this outstanding fountain is surrounded by colourful bedding areas.

Another delight to discover is the Wonderland Statue created by the famous Scottish sculptor, Thomas J Clapperton. Donated to the children of Oamaru in 1926 by Robert Milligan, this delightful statue is sited in the Wonderland Garden - walk through the Moon Gate, past the Swan Fountain and into a enchanted world of flowers and waterfalls.

If you're feeling romantic, stroll to the Summerhouse. This century-old retreat for lovers is rumoured to be a popular place for marriage proposals.

Other highlights in the gardens include the Japanese Red Bridge, the Oriental Garden, the Fragrant Garden and the large trees around the band rotunda. Special details from Victorian times can be seen everywhere - a sundial, croquet lawns, a wishing well, an aviary and a peacock house.
