A pest-proof fence at Mount Maungatautari is helping to create a haven for native species
Maungatautari Ecological Island reserve is located 30 minutes south of Hamilton nestled between Cambridge and Te Awamutu. This totally unique experience allows visitors to get up close to New Zealand’s native flora and fauna in natural, self-sustaining forest surroundings. The leisurely self-guided or guided walks (by arrangement) provide you the chance to get up close to some of New Zealand’s threatened wildlife including kaka, hihi and popokatea during the day, or hear the call of the kiwi at night.
