Holdsworth is the main entrance to the Tararua Forest Park. The picturesque Atiwhakatu stream passes through the area, creating a lovely environment for picnics.
From here you can hike to the summit of Mount Holdsworth, a 1470 metre peak. The track climbs beyond the forest up to the tussock highlands. Your effort is rewarded with expansive views of Wairarapa farmland and the rugged interior of the Tararua Range. This hike takes a full day, but is achievable for anybody of moderate fitness.
A real treat for seasoned wilderness hikers is the Holdsworth Jumbo circuit - a two to three day adventure that involves travelling along the tussock-covered tops of the Tararua Ranges. Basic hikers' huts provide accommodation on the way.
For a less time consuming adventure, try one of the short walks that begin at Holdsworth. The loop walk to Donnelly Flat takes around 40 minutes and Rocky Lookout is a 1 ½ hour return trip.
