Lakeside Trail

Mist on Lake Rotorua - click for more.
Lake Rotorua was formed by volcanic forces, and continues to steam and bubble today.
Work up an appetite before breakfast or dinner and stretch out along this delightful walkway.

Beginning in the middle of town beside the Polynesian Pools, the trail takes you southeast along the lake's edge towards the Wakarewarewa Forest Park. You'll pass along small beaches, through native scrub and across boardwalks in steamy thermal areas.

Along the route, informative signage has been provided so you can understand some of the finer details of the natural wonders around you. You'll learn to recognise much of the lake's birdlife and differentiate between one type of steaming fumarole and another.

It's a very pleasant hour and a half return walk, with the option to follow the same way back or take to the streets and explore Rotorua's motel and hotel area. If you're short on time, you can conveniently enter and leave the track at several points along the way.
