The Matemateaonga Track follows an old Maori trail through the wilderness between Taranaki and Whanganui National Park. The 42 kilometre adventure usually takes three to four days to complete. It's not a circuit, so transport will be required at the completion of your journey. Jet boat operators working on the Whanganui River can be organised to drop you off or pick you up at the eastern end of the track.
Most people find it more convenient to begin at the western end of the track, off the 'Forgotten World Highway' (State Highway 43). After about six kilometres of forest, you'll reach the Omaru Hut - a good place to stop for refreshments. At the 12 kilometre point, there's a side trip to the summit of Mount Humphries. On a clear day you can see four volcanoes - Taranaki, Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. You'll spend the first night at Pouri Hut.
Day two involves the longest walk - allow seven hours to reach Puketotara Hut. Just beyond Ngapurua Shelter there is a sweeping view of the Whanganui River and the national park volcanoes.
On day three, the track drops abruptly off the Matemateaonga Range to the river. A sign marks the jet boat rendezvous point. A detour to see the Bridge to Nowhere is always an option from here.
