Short Walks in Glacier Country

There are a variety of accessible and breathtakingly beautiful short walks in Glacier Country, West Coast. Here are some of our favourites.

The Minnehaha Walk (20 minutes return)

The start of the track is 50 metres south of the Fox Glacier Village on State Highway 6.

This easy all-weather track is well graded and sheltered by the moss strewn forest and a wealth  ferns. The track is wheelchair and pushchair friendly. At night take a torch and look out for glow worms.

This relaxing walk follows a small stream through the rainforest.  Immerse yourself in the rugged entanglement that is the West Coast podocarp forest. At night glow worms can be seen in tree trunks and along the banks of the stream.

Sentinel Rock Walk (20 minutes return)

The trail head is on the Franz Josef Glacier Valley Walk in the “Forest Walk“ section. Five minutes beyond the car park you cross a bridge and the sign post for the track is on your left.

It offers the best view of the Franz Josef Glacier for the least amount of effort. An easy ten minute climb will reward you with spectacular views of the Glacier.

Pakihi Walk- Okarito (30 minutes return)

The track is about half way between State Highway 6 and Okarito. To get there drive fifteen minutes north of the Franz Josef Glacier Village on State Highway Six and then take the turn off to Okarito. Drive five minutes past the Forks over the one-lane Okarito River bridge. You will see the Pakihi Walk car park on your right.

Enjoy superb views of mountains and rainforest.

Glacier Country NZ holds delights for everyone who wants to get out and about in nature.
