In a heartfelt gesture of manaakitanga, New Zealand welcomed Wrexham AFC with a true Kiwi experience - staying with locals, sharing meals, and exploring Aotearoa’s stunning landscapes.
From North Wales to the heart of Aotearoa, Wrexham AFC - one of the world’s oldest professional football clubs, co-owned by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds - touched down in New Zealand for a one-of-a-kind Kiwi experience.
In the lead-up to their match against Wellington Phoenix on 19 July, Wrexham players, club legends, and staff were welcomed into the homes of local whānau through a proud New Zealand tradition—billeting. More than just a place to stay, this heartfelt practice opened the door to shared meals, backyard kick-arounds, and warm manaakitanga (hospitality).
That was a bucket list trip. Wānaka might be the most beautiful place on earth. From foraging and paddock-to-plate in Hāwea Station to flying down the Shotover River in a jet boat, the whole experience was unreal and one we’ll remember for a lifetime.
I don’t think it gets much better than soaring over the mountain ranges in a helicopter, and then soaking in a hot tub under a billion stars. New Zealand, you’ve set the bar high, and I can’t wait to come back.
