Known for his progressivism and breezy manner, but not regarded as a great prime minister, it was Coates's work in various ministerial positions and during WWII, that are his greatest legacy. Industrious, an extremely hard worker not afraid to make difficult decisions and carry them through, he often put the needs of his country above his personal ambitions. Built in 1877, Ruatuna homestead is a charming and humble place, the centre of the family's agricultural enterprise, where new breeds of sheep and cattle were introduced before the turn of the 20th century and where finally, an all-female household farmed until 2000. With tours by appointment only, Ruatuna offers a fascinating glimpse into New Zealand's political and rural past.
