About

Make your own way to the starting point in downtown Ohakune to get outfitted with the provided helmet, bike and safety kit. The staff provides a safety briefing, ride orientation, and assistance with the optional free app that you can load on your own device.

When ready, board the shuttle that transports you and your bike to the Horopito end of Old Coach Road. By starting in Horopito, you begin almost 500 feet (150 meters) higher than Ohakune, which means that you can enjoy an easier bike ride overall that is mostly downhill.

Old Coach Road hugs the slopes of Mount Ruapehu, and offers varied scenery, including open farmland, native bush, train tunnels, and viaducts. Check out the steel lattice of the Taonui Railway Viaduct.
