Geraldine is a pretty country town with an artistic streak. Shop for arts and crafts, refresh at a friendly café and take a stroll around the historic trail.

Geraldine is a pretty country town set among exotic trees alongside the meandering Waihi River.  It is a town with a strong artistic streak which is reflected in the variety of boutique shops offering unique art, crafts and giftware.  Refresh at a friendly café and take a stroll on the historic trail around the compact and pleasant town’s centre.

The friendly village of Geraldine is in the heart of a prosperous farming area but is also well known for its population of artists and crafts people.  With several famous New Zealand artists hailing from the district, studios and galleries can be found to interest all artistic tastes.

You can learn about the early history of the town at the Geraldine Historical Society Museum. The town also has a highly regarded vintage car and machinery museum. Geraldine is nestled in the shadow of an ancient podocarp forest which can be reached on foot from the town centre.  The forest is wonderfully peaceful and a great place to enjoy on a hot summer’s day.

Geraldine boasts a brace of outdoor and adventure activities to rival the more well-known adventure sports destinations.  Walking and cycling trails abound and sporting pursuits include white water rafting, skiing, horse riding, canyoning, hunting, 4 x 4 adventure tours, kayaking, golf, mountain biking, and fishing.

Geraldine hosts arguably the best private observatory in New Zealand, which is fitting as the town marks the start of the Starlight Highway to Lake Tekapo and the UNESCO International Dark Sky Reserve.
