Find out moreThis 60 year old museum recounts the history and the legacy of our ancient kauri forests, and the industries associated with the trees. A spectacular new attraction opened in July 2023 welcomes visitors – the Forest Walkway takes visitors back in time, and introduces the Māori dimension of the kauri story. Visitors then discover the world’s largest kauri slab – 22.5 metres (74 feet) in length. Elsewhere they find fossilised and swamp kauri, a rare collection of polished kauri gum and a working sawmill. Beautifully crafted furniture, historic photos and recreated rooms tell the stories of Northern New Zealand. As well as an on-site café, the Museum has a fine gift store showcasing kauri timber, kauri gum and crafts of the Kaipara region.
