Gradually ascend to Saudersprig with Mount Fuji-like Mount Ngauruhoe ahead to the right from Mangatepopo trailhead and then you'll reaching the highest point, Red Crater, at 1,886m. Continue on the traverse to Kehetahi via Emerald Lake. Take the ski lift from Whakapapa Village to an altitude of approximately 2,020m. Continue on the gentle climb to Glacier Knob, where the refuge is located and then ascend to Dome Peak, one of Mount Ruapehu's peaks. Waitomo Caves, known for their pale blue glowworms.
