Paterson Inlet's rainforest shoreline has beaches of fine sand and delicate shells. In a quiet, tranquil corner, the Norwegians set up a repair base for their harpoon boats during the 1920's, employing Stewart Islanders and Norwegians. This historic site has building foundations and relics of a bygone era.
Cruise from Golden Bay Wharf, look out for marine life and penguins to Millars Beach. An easy guided walk (20 minutes), through a regenerating forest of ferns and podocarp trees, brings us to the Norwegian Whalers' Base. Take time to explore, learn and walk along the beach.
