There are over 500 ‘freedom camping’ locations scattered throughout New Zealand. Many are free or low cost in money terms.
None are free in responsibility.
These places exist because people have respected and looked after them.
They work because everyone pitches in. That means that you may need to spruce up the toilet and pick up some rubbish, happy in the knowledge that people before you have done the same.
It's a time-honoured system that has worked for generations, and long may it continue.
It's free to view the only map that shows all the freedom camping areas in NZ - www.rankers.co.nz/respect
Please use the map, and respect the areas and experiences it opens up for you.
