A vibrant year ahead for Christchurch and Canterbury

Christchurch city and the Canterbury region are in full swing for 2012 hosting international buskers, golfers and garden aficionados this summer, with plenty more to come.

Described by the Lonely Planet as a "vibrant city in transition, coping resiliently and creatively,” Christchurch is showing off its vibrancy with new developments popping up all over the place.

Whilst part of the central city of Christchurch is still cordoned off to the general public due to the impact of a series of earthquakes, the cordon is gradually receding as more of the city is deemed safe and open for business. There’s still plenty to do in and around the city.

Try these for inspiration:

• Check out the Re:Start shopping area being setup in Cashel Mall. Built out of shipping containers, this innovative village project will feature a mixture of fashion retailers, specialty gift stores, cafes and more.
   
• Driving, walking or cycling in the Port Hills for fantastic views of Christchurch, the Canterbury Plains, Banks Peninsula and Lyttelton Harbour. Still a great spot to visit but check the Christchurch City Council website for up-to-date information on tracks that may be closed and any areas to avoid.

• Visit the quirky Pop Up City bars for a good night out

• Find out what it's like in the middle of an Antarctic storm at the International Antarctic Centre

• Stroll around the Farmers Markets; showcasing the best of Canterbury’s produce 

• Saunter through Hagley Park, then admire Christchurch Botanic Gardens
