The region is home to some of New Zealand’s oldest vineyards and is best known for its Bordeaux style wines – complex Chardonnays and mouth-filling Cabernet Sauvignons. Many of Auckland’s wineries are close to the coast and “New Zealand’s island of wine” – Waiheke Island - is a short 40-minute ferry-ride from central Auckland.
