Bungy 

In the 1980’s, a couple of young kiwis, AJ Hackett and Henry van Asch, set up the first commercial bungy operation, with a jump from the historic Kawarau Bridge near Queenstown. And in launching themselves off that bridge they also launched the sport of bungy onto the world.

New Zealand has become the home of bungy jumping and, for hundreds of thousands of visitors here it’s almost a rite of passage that they take that heart-stopping leap of faith while they’re here.

Around the country you can leap from bridges, climbs, rail viaducts, specially made platforms perched on the edge of cliffs, and stadium roofs. The highest jump involves an incredible 134-metre plunge. Take a leap off the Auckland Harbour Bridge against the backdrop – if you can keep your eyes open long enough – of the beautiful Waitemata Harbour.

If you’re in the central North Island, the Mokai Gravity Canyon boasts three world-class adventure activities including a giant swing with a 50-metre freefall through the canyon below.

There are many other activities to experience while you’re in these places. Try skydiving – just to keep that adrenalin rush going, or for a more calming experience, a gentle horse riding trek.
