Follow the route taken by the first pakeha across the Ruahines to visit the commemorative Colenso cairns on both sides of the ranges. Four days, three nights staying at Department of Conservation (DOC) huts. Start Hawke's Bay, end Taihape. Good fishing in the Maropea and Waikamaka Rivers and a strong possibility of whio (blue duck) sitings. Your own food, clothing and personal tramping equipment (boots, rucksack, wet weather gear) is required (we can help). A good level of fitness is required and some prior experience of New Zealand backcountry tramping (or similar) is required. Return transport to Hawke's Bay included.
