Waitutu Forest was once described by a well known Botanist named Dr David Bellamy that "it is probably the most important forest in the world”. As one ventures further into the magnificence of the podocarp forest, it takes you into a wonderland of breath taking forest giants, huge rata and rimu where Māori once walked. The Wairaurahiri River meanders its way from Lake Hauroko to the ocean with the glory of the forest as its protector. This river is claimed to be the longest waterfall in New Zealand. It falls 180 metres to sea level and is 27 kilometres of grade 3 white water rapids. It provides the main transport route to the Lodge where it offers guests an exhilarating jet boat ride.
