Escape to Peel Forest Scenic Reserve for an epic adventure without the crowds.
Peel Forest Scenic Reserve in South Canterbury is a spectacular 700-hectare reserve of lowland podocarp forest and rugged alpine ranges. Highlights include alpine lakes, rare species of fern, and 1000-year-old tōtara.
Named for the giant mataī, kahikatea, and tōtara that line the track, this spectacular one-kilometre walk is also one of the best places to see ancient tōtara, including trees that are probably 1,000 years old.
At last count this three-kilometre walk showcased 68 species of native fern. It is also a great place to hear native birdlife, such as bellbird (korimako), riflemen (tītitipoumanu), and grey warblers (riroriro).
Beginning in Clarke Flat, this 600-metre walk takes you through a secluded gorge to Ackland Falls. Unlike elsewhere in the park, this region is dominated by flowering trees such as fuchsia, māhoe, kōwhai and kānuka.
Hike to the summit of Little Mt Peel / Huatekerekere track for spectacular views to Mt Somers, Mt Hutt, and the Canterbury plains. The ten-kilometre track takes 6-8 hours to complete, depending on which route you take and your level of fitness.

This wonderful family-friendly campground is located within Peel Forest. It is fully serviced, including kitchen and laundry facilities. The campground is closed from May to mid-October each year.
