Join the Northern Explorer train. Travel through beautiful Waikato dairy country and marvel at the engineering of the famed Raurimu spiral. Arrive Ohakune 1.45pm. Stay at the beautiful Powderhorn Lodge. Explore the town this afternoon, enjoy forest walks, or relax in the hot tubs. On tuesday travel to Whakapapa. Visit Tongariro National Park headquarters and enjoy a Skywaka ride to Knoll Ridge cafe, 2022 metres above sea level. Stay at Whakapapa to ski or snowboard and return to Ohakune by shuttle late afternoon OR continue round the mountains to trout hatchery and Army Museum. Wednesday/thursday are free to ski or snowboard. Friday visit Gollums pool, Mangawhero Falls, (Ithilien in Lord of the Rings). Return to Auckland early evening.
