He Tohu is at the heart of the visitor experience - an introduction to the people and moments that shaped Aotearoa New Zealand. Discover the original documents that tell this story: He Whakaputanga (Declaration of Independence 1835), Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi 1840), and Te Petihana Whakamana Pōti Wahine (Women’s Suffrage Petition 1893), displayed in the extraordinary curved He Tohu Document Room, inspired by a traditional waka huia (treasure box). Learn about New Zealand’s history and the stories behind these remarkable taonga. You can also visit the Alexander Turnbull Library, or cross Te Hono to the Archives building, and take in the striking architecture of the Te Kahu Heritage Campus. Free entry.
