The Putangirua Pinnacles
Drive time: 1 hour from Martinborough
Walking the Pinnacle tracks: 2-3 hours round trip
Overall: Easy walk with fantastic views
On the road to Ngawi, about an hours drive from Martinborough, are the Putangirua Pinnacles. Although modest movie stars, the main role of these ‘hoo-doos’ is marking the entrance to the Aorangi Forest Park.
You can visit the pinnacles from two ways: a bush walk up to a viewing platform overlooking the peaks or to get up close and personal head along the riverbed – be prepared to cross the creek though!
Erosion via wind and rain has created these impressive pillars and standing beneath them can be slightly eerie – though after watching Legolas, Aragorn and Gimli ride through here to meet the ‘Army of Death’ it’s to be expected!
