A farmstay would be the best way to enjoy the rural environment around Waipawa. Or spend an afternoon flicking a fly rod into the Tukituki River.

Waipawa is situated on the northern bank of the Waipawa River, a tributary of the Tukituki River. The population is mostly involved with sheep and cattle farming. There are also some market gardens in the area.

The site of Waipawa is close to a ford where the ancient Maori trail between Manawatū Gorge and Hawke's Bay crossed the Waipawa River. The local community includes painters, potters and various types of crafts people – look for galleries and studios. There’s good trout fishing around Waipawa – rainbows and browns.

Functional facts: Approx. population 1930, basic shops and services, limited accommodation.
