Hollyford Track itinerary
With a range of vegetation, native birdlife and variety of stunning vistas, the Hollyford Track makes for a fantastic hiking experience.
DAY 1
Lower Hollyford Road > Hidden Falls Hut
An easy first day - sidle along bluffs, cross boardwalks, and meander over swingbridges on the way to the Hidden Falls.
2 - 3 hours walking
DAY 2
Hidden Falls Hut > Lake Alabaster Hut
Through lowland ribbonwood/podocarps and tall beech trees, climb up to Little Homer Saddle and down to Little Homer Falls. Pass the intersection of Pyke/Hollyford rivers and continue on to Lake Alabaster.
3 - 4 hours walking
DAY 3
Lake Alabaster Hut > McKerrow Island Hut > Demon Trail Hut
Cross the Pyke River swing bridge and journey across relatively level terrain to meet the Hollyford River and on to McKerrow Island.
3 - 4 hours walking
DAY 4
Demon Trail Hut > Hokuri Hut
Follow the historic Demon Trail cattle track along the edge of Lake McKerrow/Wakatipu Waitia.
5 - 6 hours walking
DAY 5
Hokuri Hut > Martins Bay Hut
Follow the lake shore to the historic settlement of Jamestown. Leave the lake edge and continue past the Hollyford Airstrip and on to the Hollyford River/Whakatipu Ka Tuka mouth.
As with all New Zealand walks it is imporant to be prepared, the Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre (part of DOC) in Te Anau are a helpful resource.
