Much of the Waitaki District was under the sea for millions of years. The Vanished World Fossil Story explains the origins of the famous Oamaru Limestone used in many of Oamaru’s neo-classical buildings, the formation of Zealandia and evolution of marine life. Visitors can dig their own fossils from local 25 million year old limestone. Guided tours and group visits are by arrangement. Enjoy a memorable day by also exploring the authentic Nicol’s Blacksmith Shop, the Duntroon Gaol and wetland. Picnic on the Village Green or eat at the Duntroon Hotel or the Flying Pig Café. A short drive away is local Maori Rock Art, Elephant Rocks and the Anatini Fossil site.
