In picturesque surrounds at the foot of Mt Ruapehu, New Zealand’s ‘carrot capital’ appeals to hikers, bikers, snow-lovers, families and romantics.

Ohakune emits an energetic yet laid-back vibe, with plenty of activities, accommodation, shops and restaurants attracting visitors all year round.

It’s a convenient and helpful base for adventures in the Whanganui National Park, including canoe trips and jet boat tours to the famous Bridge to Nowhere.

The most popular year-round pursuit is mountain biking, particularly on the spectacular half-day Ohakune Old Coach Road. It forms the start of the Mountains to Sea, a multi-day Great Ride that winds more than 200km to reach Whanganui and the Tasman Sea.

With Tūroa ski area a short shuttle ride up Mt Ruapehu – and Whakapapa within an hour’s drive, too – Ohakune hits high gear in winter complete with the region’s liveliest après-ski scene.

But there’s heaps more on offer in this part of Ruapehu, including walks in Tongariro National Park, horse trekking and golf.
