The hub of Wellington's vast trail network is the popular Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park where there are enough trails to please everyone.
Perched on the hills above New Zealand’s capital city is a network of craft-built mountain bike tracks that traverse, climb and descend the mighty Makara Peak. After a fun day of riding there are plenty of other activities to keep you busy in Wellington. Visit Te Papa (the national museum), or Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary, and of course, there are other trails to ride. The city is surrounded by a 1000 hectare Outer Green Belt of regenerating native forest that is riddled with tracks.
Eight kilometres of sweet single track leads from the main car park to the 412-metre-high summit. Every metre has been hand built by mountain bike enthusiasts over the last 15 years and the passion of the volunteers shows. The trail curls around trees, dips through streams and hugs the contours of the land. After taking in the stunning views from the top there are several great options for your homeward run, ranging from easy to extreme – it’s just like choosing from a box of chocolates.
