Our exclusive-access 2.5-hour White Heron Tour begins with a scenic minivan journey through private farmland and wetlands to the DOC-protected Waitangiroto Nature Reserve. An easy 800-metre guided nature walk through ancient Kahikatea rainforest leads to a covered, elevated viewing hide, where visitors can observe the rare Kōtuku, or White Heron, interacting and nesting in the wild. Learn about their nesting habits, deep cultural significance and conservation story. Visitors can also view nesting Royal Spoonbill and Little Shag, along with other native birdlife during the tour. As the original and only permitted operator, White Heron Sanctuary Tours has almost 40 years’ experience sharing the magic of the Kōtuku with visitors worldwide.
