Wanaka Family Walks

Short walks in and around Wanaka, from an hour to a half or full day, suitable for the family.

Below are some of Kidz Go New Zealand favourite local walks with children in the Wanaka and Hawea areas.

BEACON POINT WALK
Follow the Lakeside Road alongside the lake to the scenic Bremner Bay. Park here and follow the flat path along the shoreline to Penrith Beach. An easy, peaceful walk – good opportunity to picnic or play at one of the beaches. Easy  1 hour return.

MOUNT IRON TRACK
Mount Iron is a glacier-carved hill, visible from anywhere in Wanaka. Worth the climb, the summit provides panoramic views. The access track is well signposted 2km from Wanaka, near Puzzling World, along State Highway 6.  Hard  1 1/2 hours return

DIAMOND LAKE: ROCKY MOUNTAIN WALKING TRACK
25 mins drive west of Wanaka, along the Mount Aspiring Road. The entire track takes around 3 hours return but the views from the summit are stunning. For a shorter walk take the return track to the Lake Wanaka viewpoint. Note: the track is steep and uneven in parts - not suited to poor weather conditions.  Hard  11/2 - 2 hours

LAKE OUTLET WALK
This leisurely walk follows the Clutha River from Wanaka to Albert Town. You can park at the town end of Penrith Beach and walk from here, or access the Outlet carpark via the Lake Outlet Holiday Park along Anderson Rd.
* Note: there are several stiles along the walk. A great track for mountain biking.
Easy  1 hour

ROY ROY TRACK
Start from the Raspberry Flat carpark, an hour’s drive from Wanaka on the Glendhu Bay Road. Fifteen minute flat walk to a swing bridge then climb to the head of the valley and great views of Rob Roy Glacier.   Moderate  3 - 4 hours return

MILLENNIUM WALK
Take the Mount Aspiring Road out of town towards Glendhu Bay. The track is well-signposted on the right hand side, just a few kilometres along this road, and finishes at a secluded bay. Ideal picnic / swim spot.
* Note: there are several stiles along this walk.  Medium  2 hours

HAWEA RIVER TRACK
An easy, well-formed track that follows the Hawea River to Albert Town. Ideal family walking or biking track. Start from Domain Road, on the right as you
enter Lake Hawea township.  Mountain Biking: a great family track.  Easy   2 hours

HAWEA LAKEFRONT TRACK
A scenic, gently undulating track that passes through several popular swimming and picnic spots. Start from The Esplanade or Scotts Beach, and wander along the foreshore. Stunning views of Hunter Valley and the head of the lake.
