Henley Lake and Wetlands in Masterton is great destination for a leisurely walk or cycle with friends and family. Set on 43 hectares of land just minutes bike ride from the town centre, it features well maintained limestone tracks that wind around a man-made lake while surrounding wetlands are full of bird life and plantings. There is something new to enjoy every time in the ever changing natural environment and the distinct seasonal changes that are unique to the Wairarapa, a region only one hour’s drive or train ride from Wellington.
Henley Lake is a great place for a family outing with the kids, walking the dog or jogging with friends. Not only is there free access to the BBQ facility, but there is a children’s playground and a fabulous array of birdlife on the lake and within the wetlands. Around 70 different species of birds have been sighted and recorded at Henley Lake and some of the more friendly birds just love visitors throwing them a few crusts of bread. But watch out for the rush!
The wooden viewing tower in the wetlands area gives a bird’s eye perspective over the entire area and is favourite place to explore for littlies.
Henley Lake is the location for regular fun runs and cycles, charity walks and events unique to the region including the annual Wairarapa Balloon Festival.
