Napier has a lot of character to offer which can mostly be traced back to its strong Art Deco heritage shaping the towns architecture. When visiting the town you'll be sure to discover it was completely rebuilt after a disastrous earthquake rocked the area in the 1930s. Thousands of people travel to Napier for the annual Art Deco weekend in February, but the town has many other qualities to offer throughout the year which make it a great destination for a family holiday.
My Top 4 Family Activities in Napier
A trip to Arataki Honey Centre guarantees a fun day out for the family, not to mention it is a free entry and free honey tasting! Celebrated as the top bee-keeping business in the southern hemisphere, the centre has a lot to offer to its visitors and children are intrigued by the whole experience. Explore the interactive visitor centre where you can learn about the NZ made honey, join a guided tour or just wander around freely as you please. The centre is open 7 days a week so it's a great option for a rainy Sunday afternoon.
Another free day out for everyone - Classic Sheepskins offers a unique opportunity to learn about the sheepskin industry with a hands-on tour. Visitors get to observe the whole process of the NZ-made sheepskin products as well as learning about the polishing of the wool and the drying out of the leather. There is a lovely gift shop to look around at the end of the tour with a wide range of NZ sheepkin, possum fur, and merino wool products. It's true NZ experience to not be missed!
Napier is home to New Zealand's national aquarium, which brings with it a diverse range of marine animals and native species for visitors to see - including Kiwis and Piranhas! An easy walk from the town centre, the aquarium is not to be missed. Their endorsement of the latest technology allows you to travel under the oceanarium and see the sea creatures feeding around you, and there is also 2 daily diver hand feeding sessions to watch which the kids love. And for the brave ones, you can even dive with sharks!
Situated in Napier's Bluff Hill is NZ's oldest prison where visitors are able to learn about the amazing history of the prison and some freaky tales of its previous inmates escapes, ghosts, and hangings. The kids will be entertained along the way with fun things to do such as taking a self-mug shot. Tours operate during the day as well as at night if you're up for it! The old prison is now operating as a successful backpackers accommodation, and is surrounded by beautiful scenery overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
