Wanaka represents all that New Zealand is famous for in the tourism industry and it really does have something for everyone. You can take the whole family and be guaranteed an all-round great trip.
My Top 5 Family Activities in Wanaka
Home to the worlds first 3D great maze, the Puzzling World is a must-see if you're travelling with children. As well as the maze, you will see NZ's very own Leaning Tower of Wanaka, and illusion rooms that will get the kids thinking, and probably the adults too for that matter.
Like any good activity centre, you will find a cafe and gift shop to keep you occupied while the kids run free. And being only a 2 km drive from the lake-front it's conveniently placed just out of the town centre.
You'd be silly to go to Wanaka and not take advantage of the stunning surroundings. And what better way to do that than on horseback? Lead by an experienced local guide, the expeditions take you on a country trek through the Cardrona Valley and teach you about some of the interesting history of Wanaka as you ride. The horses are extremely well trained and are patient with all levels of riders, so no experience is necessary and children as young as 4 are able to participate.
Rock climbing is always a great family activity, because it is both challenging and active. At Clip 'N Climb the prices are reasonable, and sessions only last for an hour so it is the perfect solution if you have some time to spare during the day. Safety briefings are given before the climb and leaders supervise the kids throughout.
An obvious attraction that draws in thousands of people to Wanaka During winter is the world-class ski fields. If you are travelling in the ski-season with children, I would recommend trying out Cardrona Ski Field. It offers great beginner and intermediate slopes, and kids ski centre with instructors on hand, and a creche for the littlies.
Treble cone is also a great option for a family, as it has a child-care centre and kids teen clubs with instructors and supervisors. Both ski fields are accesible by car and also provide shuttles up and down the hill if you'd prefer not taking your own car up.
After a hard day of activities why not enjoy a relaxing evening at the luxury Oakridge Resort? Perhaps a more high-end activity than my other suggestions, but I think a holiday full of outdoor adventures calls for something like this at the end of the week. It has 9 diferent outdoor heated pools including rock pools and spas to relax the muscles. The resort welcomes kids with open arms and is a popular place for tourists to go at the end of a long day or in the weekends.
